These amazing architectural shoes were heavily influenced by Antoni Gaudi’s experimental method in designing the façade of La Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona.  The strings that make up the heels will fool our eyes into thinking that they provide an unstable base.  Unbeknownst to us, Marla Marchant purposely designed her shoes in such a way that they create a weightless illusion.  She wants those who wear her shoes to be seen as if they were hanging from a net.

Artemis Mavrokefalaou’s jewelry design is completely the opposite of Marla’s “weightless” vision.  Her creations are heavily loaded with the mythology, art and history of the ancient Greece.  Don’t get me wrong, Artemis’s collection looks stunningly sleek and modern, which is why I paired her jewelry with Marla’s shoes for this editorial.  However, it is when you set your eyes upon her beautiful jewelry that you will feel as though you are being told a tale from the ancient Greek civilization.

Having a modern appeal is not the only reason I put together Marla’s and Artemis’ work.  Intriguingly, even though both designs are daring, neither of them scream “look at me, I want to be the center of attention!”  They subtly become a part of whoever wears them.  Marla and Artemis live in two different continents, focus in different areas of fashion design, and are inspired by different eras, yet they share the same philosophy: simplicity and subtlety.  I guess I shouldn’t be surprised as simplicity is the ancient Greeks’ way of life, and Antoni Gaudi is a simple man who always thought of logical and functional solutions to all his designs.

Marla loves to transform her ideas into objects using her hands.  Even more rewarding for her is revisiting the craftsmanship of the past by modernizing traditional techniques.  To complete the shoes, which were part of her master program project, Marla combined the use of 3d printing, woven patterns and traditional handicraft on alternative materials and components.   The result: impeccable designs of shoes that have the perfect balance of aesthetics and functionality.  It is unfortunate that Marla is not currently working on her own label, but she says that she is open to any challenging collaborations with inspiring artists or designers.
